OBJECTIVE To analyze and compare the primary outcome between trabeculectomies combined with extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) than in those with phacoemulsification (Phaco).
METHOD The authors retrospectively reviewed a consecutive 357 cases surgeon (475 eyes) of the combined cataract extraction, intraocular lens implantation and trabeculectomy enhanced Mitomycin. Patients were divided into two groups, those who underwent extracapsular cataract extraction (80 eyes) and those who had phacoemulsification (395 eyes). Analysis of postoperative visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), number of glaucoma medications, side effects after surgery and required additional procedures, performed. Minimum follow-up was 12 months with an average of 53 months.
RESULTS There is no significant difference (p = 1.000) between the groups in terms of the rate of increase in visual acuity, 66% (ECCE) than 59% (Phaco). Postoperative IOP with both techniques down significantly (p <0.0001). Previous IOP reduction obtained by Phacoemulsification, but there was no difference at the end of the follow-up period (14.4 vs. 14.1 mmHg ECCE Phaco mmHg, p = 1.0000).
Postoperative pressure spikes occurred in 6% versus 10% (p = 0.3995) from the eye. There is no significant difference (55% compared to 63% Phaco ECCE, p = 0.1674) between the two groups in terms of reducing glaucoma medication was found. The number of postoperative complications (89% vs 68.5%) was significantly higher (p = 0.0001) in the ECE-group, as well as the number of eyes required further intervention (86% versus 64%, p = 0.0001)
CONCLUSION Both techniques were effective joint operations and generate long-term results were similar. However phacoemulsification can reduce post operative complications associated with this operation.

Aging and COPD affect different domains of nutritional status: early childhood studies.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and aging can lead to malnutrition. We aim to explore whether COPD and aging define malnutrition in different manners. 460 stable COPD outpatients (376 men and 84 women) from the consequences of COPD in the database Extrapulmonary Elderly (ECCE) study investigated (age 75.0 ± 5.9 yr; forced expiratory volume in 1 s 54.7 ± 18 3% predicted). The nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment® (MNA) questionnaire. Of MNA, exploring the domain of the three values are calculated nutritional status: body composition, energy intake and body function score.
Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage negatively correlated with five items MNA exploring mobility, patient perception of nutrition itself and health status, and arm and calf circumference (the lowest Spearman’s rho (rs) = – 0,011; the highest p = 0.039). GOLD stage independently correlated with body composition and body function score (model r 2 = 0.073).
